Ways to Achieve Pregnancy with Low Sperm Count
If you have a low sperm count then your sperm will not be able to fertilize your female partner’s egg. However, it does not mean that this condition is not treatable as several reproductive techniques and treatments will help you to achieve pregnancy.
There are a lot of causes for low sperm count. Here are some of the factors mentioned below:
- Consumption of alcohol
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
- Unhealthy lifestyle and diet
- Taking drugs that reduce your testosterone levels.
- Taking hot baths
- Taking a lot of stress
If you are already suffering from a low sperm count or Oligospermia, then there are several treatments available that will increase your sperm count and achieve pregnancy naturally. Here are the treatments by which your female partner can get pregnant with a low sperm count:
- Surgical treatment – If you’re suffering from varicocele, which is if the veins inside the scrotum become enlarged then it can be corrected with surgical measures. The doctor will make a small incision in your abdominal area and will pass a tiny instrument to repair the varicocele. This surgical procedure will require general anesthesia. However, if there is an absence of sperms while you’re ejaculating, then the doctor will use a sperm injection to retrieve the sperms from your testes.
- IVF (in vitro fertilization) – If you have a low sperm count then this is one of the best male fertility treatments available. This method stimulates ovulation in which the doctor will collect the matured eggs from your female partner or an egg donor and will then fertilize those eggs in the laboratory. This procedure is done under a controlled environment and after fertilizing those eggs the doctor will again inject the eggs into your partner’s uterus. Studies have shown that this technique has been quite successful in achieving pregnancy.
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) – Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is used for collecting a single sperm from your testes with a tiny needle and is fertilized with an egg of your female partner. This fertilized egg is then transferred to your female partner’s uterus.
However, this treatment is applicable only when you’ve been trying to achieve pregnancy with your partner for 2 consecutive years. But you have a low sperm count or only a few sperms left in your testes. It is mostly seen that by combining IVF with ICSI, you can achieve higher success rates for improving or treating low sperm count.
- Hormonal treatments – If you have a low sperm count or pituitary hormones, then it will also affect sperm production. In this case, there are several hormonal treatments available that a doctor will advise you.
Make sure to consult a fertility specialist in this condition, he will inject certain hormones such as Pergonal and Humagon. These hormones will increase your testosterone levels and sperm count and will help you to achieve pregnancy naturally.
- Antibiotics – It is rarely found that in certain cases if you have a low sperm count then it may sometimes cause an infection. These infections may sometimes affect your sperm production and also obstruct the passage for the sperms to travel.
In this case, your doctor will diagnose this as a low sperm count and will prescribe you antibiotic treatments or medicines to cure the infection. These antibiotics will also help to increase your sperm count. However, make sure to consult your doctor immediately if you’re facing such a condition as this may lead to permanent damage.
- Donor sperm insemination – If there is an absence of sperms while you’re ejaculating or if you have a low sperm count, then the only option left for you is donor sperm insemination. You will find much-frozen sperm of the sperm donors and you can check their profiles and pick a sample according to your choice.
However, these sperm samples are stored for over 6 months in a controlled environment and temperature. All these samples are thoroughly examined by the doctors to avoid any infectious disease.
- Lifestyle changes – Last but not least, it is your responsibility to follow and maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent low sperm count and other male infertility issues.
