Treatment for Blocked Fallopian Tubes (Hydrosalpinx)

Various modalities are available for the treatment of blocked fallopian tubes.

Non-surgical Treatment for Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Generally, a couple will prefer a non-surgical approach for opening fallopian tubes. The most common non-surgical approach which is available is a course of genital antibiotics along with antispasmodic which can be prescribed approximately for 14 days. Following this, a repeat test of the fallopian tube is done and if it is a spasmodic cause or very mild infective cause then the fallopian tube would open on this.

Ayurveda for Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Before opting for surgical treatment, many couples would experiment with alternative medications such as “Uttar Basti” which is an ayurvedic treatment for blocked fallopian tubes. It is important to remember the person who makes decoction and the person who does Uttar Basti is extremely important. When Uttar Basti is done by a trained ayurvedic physician, the results in opening fallopian tubes especially the blockages even infective blockages including mid-tubal blockages, are excellent.

However, have a word of caution and thorough counseling before undergoing this procedure and this procedure needs to be done by a trained physician.

Surgical Treatment for Blocked fallopian Tubes

When these two modalities fail couples tend to go for surgical treatment. One must know to attain pregnancy, fallopian tubes should be functional. A fallopian tube must be functional only then opening it up will be beneficial.

When the fallopian tube is dilated with water collection inside which is known as hydrosalpinges which indicates fallopian tubes are non-functional.

If there is a distal tubal block which is a block near fibril ends, cannot be corrected easily following any form of laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery will work best for proximal or cornual tubal blocks. It’s important for couples to know whenever surgery is being attempted to block the fallopian tube, it does not guarantee the permanent opening of the fallopian tube nor does it guarantee a successful pregnancy outcome. It is recommended that the patient has a detailed discussion with their doctor before undergoing any form of treatment for a blocked fallopian tube.

When the fallopian tube blockage is untreatable the couple will have to opt for assisted reproductive treatment like IVF or ICSI.
