What is Focal Adenomyosis?

Focal Adenomyosis is a common disease that occurs in the Uterus, especially in the Posterior Uterus.

Adenomyosis is a disease where there is an abnormal growth of the endometrium into the uterine muscle. The exact cause for this occurrence is not known.

Does Focal Adenomyosis cause pain?

Yes, this can cause severe pain during menstruation in these women. Progressively the pain doesn’t get relieved by taking medicines.

Can focal Adenomyosis be cured with medicines?

All medicines which are prescribed for Focal Adenomyosis are temporary. Painkillers, Dienogest and Leupride injections are commonly prescribed temporary medicines. 

Why are medicines temporary for Focal Adenomyosis?

Medicines only help in stopping periods. This reduces the pain which would have occurred during periods. However they don’t offer any permanent cure.

Does all Focal Adenomyosis require surgery?

Surgery in focal Adenomyosis is predominantly driven by Pain factor of the patient. Patients who are in severe pain, often require surgery for getting relieved. Focal Adenomyosis more than 3.5-4.0 cm can be extremely painful and is an indication for Surgery once diagnosed.

Is focal Adenomyosis common at a young age?

This is a known disease of the early reproductive age group. The highest occurrence is in women less than age 35 years.

Can focal Adenomyosis be painless?

It’s rare to have a focal Adenomyosis which is painless.

Can I have a recurrence of Focal Adenomyosis?

A disease like Adenomyosis, can never be removed completely even by the Best surgical team as this is a disease in the Uterine Muscle and the muscle cannot be removed completely. Some patients, less than 30% may require 3-6 months of continuous Oral Contraceptive Pills if there is a Peritoneal component of endometriosis which is associated with Focal Adenomyosis or if there is an Ovarian Endometriosis as well. The remaining 70% don’t require any medicines to prevent recurrence.

Can one conceive naturally after surgery for Focal Adenomyosis?
