Agenesis of the cervix is an extremely common disorder that occurs due to the absence or malformation of the cervix.
This is a disorder which is commonly diagnosed in young girls especially once they start to have menses.
Because the cervix is absent in these young girls they experience severe pain in the abdomen at the time of having menses and this menstrual blood also collects in the uterine cavity and in the fallopian tube leading to something called hematometra and hematosalpinx.
Despite presentation being early these young girls are often afflicted with severe endometriosis.
The surgery for this disease requires an extremely good amount of reconstruction which involves anastomosis of the uterus along with the redundant vagina. Dr Jay Mehta and his team are known for having the highest number of these reconstructions.
The big problem with these reconstructions is that the cervix can again undergo stenosis and once it undergoes stenosis then it becomes extremely difficult to establish a patent on anastomosis between the uterus and the vagina.
Dr. Jay Mehta has a master class of this surgery on YouTube which is an extremely popular class for viewing this surgery.
A long term follow up for all the patients is usually considered to be mandatory at least till the age of 20 years. In order to conserve the uterus surgery in the situation should be planned as early as possible. Our team also uses an innovative technique of using INTERCEED. This ensures that there is better uptake of the anastomosis.
If the surgery is done nicely these women are able to get menstruation as well as later get married and have their children in their own uterus.
